"Entkusseln"

What does "entkusseln" mean? What for is it important?

The cultural landscape of Lüneburg Heath is man-made so it has to be preserved by hand. When left on its own heathland areas will develop into a forest again in different succession phases. This process is disrupted by the VNP. One of the supporting methods is "entkusseln", where pioneer tree species like pine and birch has to be removed by hand with a spade or a (motor) saw.

The VNP is responsible for seeing that all preservation methods ensure the development of the most varied landscape possible with different succession phases. Because: The more varied the landscape, the bigger is the variety of flora and fauna within this area.

Fishfarming Holm

The fishfarm Holm is located in the beautiful creek valley of the "Weseler Bach". Since 1903 carp, tench and pike are breeded. By extensive management of the ponds the high quality fish grows natually. Besides, the VNP supports a various and unique cultural landscape.

Starting in spring 2010 the ponds were leased on a long-term babsis so secure the excistence of the larges wetlands within the Nature Reserve. Keeping carps is the best method of saving this special ecosystem of ponds.

Summer and winter ponds

The management of these carp ponds is a feature in Lower Saxony. The ponds are not carrying water all year round, but they are divided into summer and winter ponds. Water is coming from the "Weseler Bach". The ponds are not manured. Only some lime marl is added due to the low ph value. Sediment discharge is removed only on a small scale and used for embanking.

In spring the summer ponds are ponded and hibernating fish is put into it. Additionally young fish is added after spawning season. They stay in the ponds until they are drained again in autumn. The fish is moved into the deep winter ponds being drained in spring time.

The winter ponds as well as the embankments are mowed and the swaths are trucked off. Afterwards they are ponded for the winter cultivation.

Predominant fish: Carp

Due to the extensive keeping, the fish has to look for their food by themselves. That is the reason for high quality foodfish with solid meat and a nice taste.
